Curriculum

Through the hard work of many individuals at the University of Notre Dame, in collaboration with Grandmaster Cooper, this mudansha syllabus was adopted on April 25, 1995.

Implicit under all levels is the understanding that a student is learning all of the stances, applications and techniques involved in the kata.

 
Promotion to Yellow Belt

KATA: Kuk-ma 1& Kuk-ma 2

BLOCKS: Downward, Rising, Single-arm, Outside, Double-arm, Knife-hand, X-Block

STRIKES: Upper target punch, Middle target punch, Lower target punch, Knife-hand strike

KICKS: Side thurst, Front snap, Roundhouse, Back Kick

UKEMI: Side Break Fall, Bridge Backfall, Facefall, Forward Roll, Back Roll

SELF-DEFENSE TECHNIQUES vs. choke, vs. full nelson, vs. bear hug from behind, over arms, vs. bear hug from behind, under arms, vs. bear hug from front, vs. headlock, vs. two hand grab from behind - encouraged

COMBATIVES: Three-step sparring - three variation

 
Promotion to Green Belt

KATA: Pyung-An 1 & Pyung-An 2

BLOCKS: Combination - Downward & Rising

STRIKES: Upper target hammer fist, Middle target hammer fist, Spear hand, Reverse punch, Double arm block w/ uppercut, Upper target palm heel - encouraged, Middle target palm heel - encouraged, Lower target palm heel - encouraged

KICKS: Testing requirement for kicks - Marked improvement in the basic kicks including balance and focus with improved speed and power, Inside Crescent - encouraged, Outside Crescent - encouraged

UKEMI: Roll w/ a slapout, Either punch roll OR fake one way roll the other, Modified Tomoe Nage, Modified Free Ukemi

SELF-DEFENSE TECHNIQUES: Outside Sweep (O-soto-gari), Inside Sweep (O-uchi-gari), Hip Throw (O-goshi), Shoulder Throw (Seoi-nage), Arm Bar with Reverse Sweep - encouraged

COMBATIVES: Trading Side Kicks - distance of 2" with fully-focused kicks, Six Step Structured Line Drill

 
Promotion to Purple Belt

KATA: Pyung-An 2 & Pyung-An 3

BLOCKS: Strong technical improvement in the speed, power and focus of blocks, with an eye toward the development of fluidIty in movement without loss of the focus of the technique, Dead arm - encouraged, 3 Hand Circle - (sliding/soft block ending w/ a back fist) - encouraged

STRIKES:Back Fist, Ridge Hand - encouraged

KICKS: Inside Crescent, Outside Crescent, Skipping Side - encouraged, Hook - encouraged, Back Spin - encouraged, Jumping Front - encouraged

UKEMI: Extend Roll, Airplane Roll, Silent Roll, No Arms Roll, Standing Free Ukemi, Standing Tomoe Nage, Flying Falls:side/back/face, Drunken Roll - encouraged

SELF-DEFENSE TECHNIQUES: Proper execution of the HipThrown, Shoulder Throw, Inside Sweep and Outside Sweep, with rhythm, and fluidity is required, Arm bar with Reverse Sweep, 2 Sacrifices - (Double leg takedown with Boston Crab and Front Kneeling Knee Push), Pickups - encouraged, Arm bar/Sankyo/Wrist Throw - encouraged, Turn-overs - encouraged, Joint locks and pressure points - Introduced

COMBATIVES: Basic Sparring - three basic kicks and basic strikes in combinations, 1 board break - any basic technique

KICKS: Skipping Side Kick, Ax - encouraged, Hook - encouraged, Jumping Front - encouraged, Spin Crescent - encouraged, Spin Hook - encouraged, Flying Side - encouraged

UKEMI: Rolls - Punch, Fake one way..., No Arms, Dive (knee height), One-Finger, Pop-up - encouraged, Handstand - encouraged

SELF-DEFENSE TECHNIQUES: More Advance versions of 4 basic throws, Reverse sweep w/ hair, Inside sweep w/ 1 finger, Drop throw (Soto-Makikomi), Nikkyo, Sankyo, Gi Throw - (Tai-Otoshi), Free Ukemi Wrist Throw, Multiple advanced versions of basics are encouraged

COMBATIVES: 2 Board Break, Sparring with kick combinations and sweeps - light contact

 
Promotion to Black Belt

KATA: Chulgi 1 & Pal Sek

STRIKES: All strikes with speed, power and focus, transition between strikes is fluid

KICKS: Inside Roundhouse, Hook, Jumping Front, Ax, Spin Back, Spin Hook or Spin Crescent, Flying Side

UKEMI: Rolls on floor, Break Falls on floor, Tomoe Nage from Knee, Free Ukemi from knee

SELF-DEFENSE TECHNIQUES: All basic techniques with speed, power, focus and fluidity, Advanced versions of the basic throws and sweeps, Tomoe-nage, Modified Shoulder Throw (Uchi-mata), Shoulder Yank (Tai-otoshi), Two-hand Shoulder Throw (Morote Seoi-nage), Kotegaeshi, Advanced Sankyo, 10 techniques vs. single (basic) attack, Multiple escapes from chokes and grabs are encouraged, Techniques vs. empty hand, knife and stick

OTHER: 3 Board Break any technique, Sparring - controlled contact, Tournament and/or similar experience is strongly encouraged, Introduction to Arnis or other weapon technique is encouraged
