Our system is life-changing and life-defining. Through studying Cooper Ryu Vee Jitsu, we become better people. Martial arts educate the individual as a whole, strengthening the body, mind and spirit. The dichotomy of the jujitsu and tae kwon do we practice is evidenced in the discipline and flexibility they bring into our lives. Through the learning process based in personal struggle, we discover our true potential to achieve. These are teachings carried with us both in and outside of the classroom.
Commitment to the art, to instructors and other students: It is through this commitment that we form the community and build the friendships in and outside of the dojo that are crucial to our learning. This commitment brings honor to our system and those that came before us.
We do not pre-judge but instead embrace the spirit and individuality of each student: We do not turn people away based on gender, race, religion, age, sexual orientation nor physical challenges. We believe that anyone can be successful in the practice of Cooper Ryu. We acknowledge however, that this success must be judged on individual potential for achievement.
It is through an open mind that we gain the most knowledge and become superior martial artists. We strive to constantly improve ourselves. We must be able to learn from a variety of sources and in diverse situations. This is seen in our incorporation of techniques from Arnis, BJJ, Capoeira, Kenpo, etc. Even when we are unfamiliar with something or disagree with it, we must glean what we can from it, incorporating aspects into our existing ideas and making it our own.
The importance of giving: We demonstrate our commitment to one another by sharing our knowledge, through learning from our predecessors and teaching those who come after. It is through this practice that we bring honor to the Cooper Ryu system.
Safety above all things: Protecting our students is our number one priority. This extends to the way we choose to conduct ourselves inside of the dojo through safely training as well the fact that at the root of our art is self-defense – the ability to protect oneself. We are adamant in our belief that while each situation requires a unique assessment and solution appropriate to that assessment, it may best be resolved by a nonviolent action. |
